An early rise again this morning for the 2 hour drive to the North of the country. At 9 o'clock we have to be present at the ferry pier near Holwerd. Under heavy clouds and the gazes of the tourists that take the ferry to Ameland 6 paddlers start their trip. It is 5 past 10 and we cross to the ferry channel to set course (0°) towards a buoy in the small channel. From this buoy we follow the channel to benefit from the current of the eb-tide. |

Even uitblazen achter Pampus Last sunday march 30th, a trip had been plaane by the TKBN paddling union from the Almeerderzand to Durgerdam and back. As Tom had obligations elsewhere, I left for Flevoland very early after a short night's sleep (the clock had been put forward that night for daylight saving). After about a quarter of an hour the first of the other paddlers started to arrive. After the usual hello's and how-are-you's we could unload and pack our boats. |

Seven new paddles (photo: Hans Heupink) During yesterdays workshop 7 participants carved 7 new paddles from the blank they had carefuly glued together on the thursday before teh workshop. The day started at nine o'clock with a cup of coffe or tea and some explanatation. After that it was a lot of hard work to execute all the steps to slowly shape a blank into a paddle. This years laminates were build up up from red cedar with a core of ash and edge strips of oak. For the tips we had found a nice piece of mahogany. This will eventually give nice red and hard tip, but during the shaving this mahogany was sometime quite brittle. After a long day of shaving, marking and shaving the padles are proudly posed and can be taken for some finishing like sanding and oiling. |

Today I went to Bunschoten to teach rolling to Maarten. Maarten had already taken two courses in the swimming pool with my club K.V. Keistad, but still didnot succeed in coming up all the way. We had agreed on this lesson a while back but had been postponing for several reasons until now. Finally I have the opportunity to try the Wavepiecers attitude in teaching. (we had just catched the orca in the background ) |

Because Tom and I had decided to do our seakayaking exams this year, we included the TKBN seacamp in june in our planning. After registering we received a lot of information and thus armed we drove to Ellemeet on Schouwen-Duiveland in Zeeland.
Once there, we found ourselves at the aft end of a large group of cars with kayaks of all brands and colors on top. First we put up our tent and then at 21:15 there was a campmeeting where the instructors got introduced and everybody could enlist in the diverse groups of the camp. Tom and I chose the seakayaking exam group together with 11 other people. After an introductory round where everybody could express their experience and wishes for this camp, the instructors told us we would go to Springersdiep on saturday, for strokes practice at first and later find some surf on the Aardappelbult. (a 15 km long local sandbank). Then we went to bed to join the morning's meeting after a hearty breackfast. Everybody found themselves at the water by 10:00. |

This is the first trip on the sea's salt water this year. We (Dick and Tom) have applied for a trip in the Voordelta led by Hans Heupink. With a group of 10 paddlers we put off at the Brouwersdam's south end. When we're sufficiently far out to sea, we change course northward in the direction of the lighthouse at the tip of Goeree-Overflakkee. Because of the low wind there are only small waves and after one and a half hours of paddling we land through 30 centimeter high surf, just past the lighthouse, for lunch under a watery sun.
During lunch we're charged left and right by kitebuggies that go quite fast despite the low windspeed. Nice to look at. |

Friday at 14:15 hrs we arrive at the Rhederlaag, to build up for the second Qajaq Treffen in the Netherlands. On the same spot as last year we hang the ropes for the ropesgymnastics under a large tarp roof incase the predicted rain comes. We pitch our tent close by. At the end of the afternoon Freya arrives in her castle on wheels and soon we are on the water to practice some rolling and of course to try Freya's Qaanaaq ss, the 'sexy hexy'. Our friend Niklas has come especially from Sweden to participate. |

This year we visited the 'Stocken Träff', a seakayak symposium on the island Orust in Sweden. The symposium is organised by Orust Kayak, a seakayak centre and outfitter in the little village Stocken. Besides the 'modern' seakayak, the 'traditional' seakayak is getting more coverage each year on this symposium. This year for instance the first 'Greenland' style rolling competition was organised. And the people of Qajaq.se (Magnus and Sten). thought we should also compete, as we are paddling a traditional kayak and we can do more than one roll. |

Triggered by a discussion on the QajaqUSA forum on a grouporder for material to make a neoprene tuilik and because we had already experienced the advantages of a (neoprene) Tuilik for practicing rolling at the Qajaq Træf in Denamark, we have been busy this winter to make our own Tuiliks from neoprene. At first we wanted to join the grouporder in the US, but fortunately we were able to get a suitable address for neoprene in Italy. They were able to deliver the neoprene at competative prices. But from Italy the transportcosts are considerably lower and we do not have to pay importtaxes. We made combined order with a couple of qajaq enthousiasts from Turnhout (B) and we ordered 7 sheets of neoprene from Italy (5 double sided and 2 single sided). |

This year Tom and myself have organised the Qajaq Treffen for the first time. We wanted to put traditional qajaq-ing in the spotlight by combining this event with the Veluwe Rally. On friday afternoon we packed our gear and drove to the recreation area Rhederlaag. We had more registrations than we initially expected and the weather forecast for the weekend was pretty good. |

Late afternoon on september first, after a 9 hours drive, we arrive at the Havkajak centre Svendborg to visit the annual Danish Qajaq Træf held on 2, 3 and 4 september 2005. This seakajak centre is beautifully located on the south coast of the small island of Tåsinge (just below Fyn or Funen) . We are welcomed by Lenze Middelberg who runs this seakayak centre.
We pitch our tent on the edge of the pasture and have only a small row of trees between us and the see. On the friday our hosts for the Træf are joining us on the Havkajak centre's campground. |

Last saturday, 28th may, the first paddle making workshop was held at the club location of K.V. Keistad. Under the guidance of Dick and Tom, three students (Gerard, Hans & Niklas) have successfully created their own traditional paddle.
After Tom, with help of some schematics, explaines the various steps involved in making a paddle, the students receive their large beam of pine from which they will have to make their paddles. The first lines are drawn on these blanks and before long the electric shaves are humming and spitting out the first chips of wood. |
